Nicknamed "The Big A", Aqueduct track is a Thoroughbred horse racetrack facility in Jamaica, New York, and is the only racetrack located within New York City limits.
Aqueduct features three courses: the Main Track (dirt) with a circumference of 11/8 miles (1.8 km). The Inner Dirt Track, which is exactly 1 mile (1.6 km) long; and the innermost course is a turf (Tall Fescue) course, spanning 7 furlongs plus 43 feet (1.4 km).
Opened on Sept. 27, 1894 in Queens, Aqueduct track was torn down in 1956 and the new "Big A" opened in 1959. In 1975 the inner track was constructed to facilitate winter racing. Currently Aqueduct offers thoroughbred racing running from October to May. Notable races include Grade I events such as the Carter Handicap, Cigar Mile Handicap, and Gazelle Stakes.
