Opened in 1990 under the name Dueling Grounds, Kentucky Downs racetrack is located in Franklin, Kentucky. The track is unique among American tracks as it is a European-style course — its surface is all turf (grass) not dirt, and it is not oval in shape.
After some financial problems and having its license revoked for not being able to meet its purses in 1996, the track was auctioned off and purchased by Churchill Downs, Turfway Park and other investors. The Park was renamed as Kentucky Downs and in 1998 fortunes turned after the Kentucky Cup Festival was announced.
In 2009, the track was ranked #2 out of 65 thoroughbred racetracks in North America by the Horseplayers Association of North America.
