Opened in 1870 in Baltimore, Maryland, Pimlico Race Course is the second-oldest track in the United States, just behind Saratoga in New York.
Through its rich history, Pimlico has hosted numerous racing icons such as Man o' War, Sir Barton, Citation, Secretariat and Seabiscuit, who defeated Triple Crown winner War Admiral on November 1st, 1937 in the second ever the second Pimlico Special.
Now a national treasure, Pimlico is also the home of the world famous Preakness Stakes. The annual event held on the third Saturday of May is the second leg of the Triple Crown, with the Kentucky Derby preceding it and the Belmont Stakes following it. Other notable races include the Dixie Stakes, Black Eyed Susan Stakes (Grade 2) and the Barbaro Stakes, which debuted in 2007. The event honors Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who suffered a fall in the first hundred yards of the Preakness Stakes and was euthanized on January, 2007.
